Measure blinds for bay windows
Find your fit. Record the right dimensions. Check before you order.
Before you measure
Use a metal tape measure, pencil and worksheet. Record width first, then drop, in exact millimetres (mm). Do not round, use a cloth tape or copy dimensions from house plans. Measure every window separately, even when windows look identical.
If measuring with someone else, repeat each reading aloud as it is written down. Check every measurement and order detail twice, then a third time. For ordinary recess measurements, do not make factory deductions yourself. Special-window instructions must be read with the product guide; ask us to resolve any conflict before ordering.
Make two clearance templates
This method covers roller, Venetian and vertical blinds. Cut two cardboard strips, each 300 mm long, with a width equal to the product’s depth. Include any extra projection from extension brackets or spacer blocks.
Template depths: single roller 70 mm; double roller 90 mm; 25 mm aluminium Venetian 55 mm; 50 mm aluminium Venetian 70 mm; timber/PVC Venetian 80 mm; 127 mm vertical 80 mm; 89 mm vertical 65 mm. These template widths are distinct from full-recess depth recommendations. Confirm the projection for any unlisted system.
For recess fitting, test that the templates fit inside. For face fitting, hold the strips at 90 degrees to the architrave face. At the left angle, bring strips A and B together until their front corners meet and mark A/B. Repeat at the right angle with C/D. Mark the sill or architrave fixing face as applicable.
Measure the three blinds
Centre blind: measure from the left corner of B to the right corner of C. Left blind: measure from the right corner of A outward to the desired outer end. Right blind: measure from the left corner of D outward to the desired outer end. Keep these labelled points on your sketch.
Name each order line Bay Window Left, Bay Window Middle or Bay Window Right and still select recess or face fit. Make no further deductions: the factory makes a small deduction to the middle blind. Use each product’s own drop instructions.
Over-roll is recommended for bay rollers to reduce the gaps between adjacent fabrics. Bay shutters use a different method. For shutters, another product or uncertainty, send us a photo and obtain the appropriate instructions before ordering.
