Measuring guide
How to measure for linked roller blinds
This guide covers linked roller blinds, and butted roller or Venetian blinds, across wide multi-panel windows and sliding doors. A linked roller system uses one intermediate bracketOne bracket shared by two linked blinds, in place of two separate end brackets. rather than two separate end brackets, which reduces the gap between the blinds. Measure in millimetres (mm), record the width first and then the drop.
Before you measure
When do I need linked blinds?
The maximum single-roller width is 3000 mm. Linking covers wider openings, and can use a shared motor or chain, or a supported independent arrangement so a door can open without raising every blind.
How many blinds can be linked?
The online linking choices cover two or three blinds. For more panels, one blind can span several panels while still ending over a mullionThe upright bar between two panes or panels of glass.. Contact us for a manual order of more than three linked blinds.
How should I measure?
Use a metal tape measure, a pencil and our worksheet. Record the width first, then the drop, in exact millimetres (mm). Do not round, use a cloth tape or copy dimensions from house plans. Measure every window separately, even when windows look identical.
If you are measuring with someone else, repeat each reading aloud as it is written down. Check every measurement and order detail twice, then a third time.
Do I make any deductions?
For ordinary recess measurements, do not make factory deductions yourself. Special-window instructions must be read with the product guide; ask us to resolve any conflict before ordering.
Plan the divisions
Split the blinds over the centre of a mullion, never over a pane of glass.
Linked blinds share one intermediate bracket, so they sit close together: allow 17 mm for linked blinds, and 30 mm or more for unlinked, butted blinds.
Measure step by step
Take every measurement in millimetres (mm).
Check the mounting type before you measure
Face fit (on the architraves)
Step 1: Measure each blind’s width
- Left blind A1: measure from the outer left architrave edge to the centre of its next mullion.
- Centre blind A2: measure between the centres of its left and right mullions.
- Right blind A3: measure from the outer right architrave edge to the centre of its adjacent mullion.
A two-panel opening uses the same approach with two blinds.
Step 2: Measure the overall width and check
Measure the overall width B from outer architrave edge to outer architrave edge.
Check: A1 + A2 + A3 = B.
Use B alone if ordering one blind across the whole opening.
Step 3: Measure the drop
For a roller drop, measure from the top of the architrave to the floor.
For Venetian drops, use that product’s own guide and its floor-clearance allowance. The width-splitting method does not replace the product’s drop rules: see the timber Venetian guide.
Recess fit (inside the frame)
Step 1: Divide the recess the same way
For a recess window, use the inside reveal edges and the mullion centres, with the same division method.
Make no recess deductions.
Step 2: Sliding doors
Recess fitting within a sliding-door opening is not recommended, because there is usually insufficient room. for a sliding door.
Record each blind in the order
- Add each linked blind as a separate cart item.
- For every blind, select Linking Blinds, the total (two or three), and the control arrangement: left or right chain, or motorised.
- Identify its position as left, middle or right, and enter the widths of the other linked blinds for cross-checking.
- Use the same control-configuration selection on every member of the linked set. This includes motorised sets, where the motor cost is shared across the linked products.
- Keep the window name, positions and measurements together on your worksheet.
Before you order
- Label your measurements “Width” and “Drop”, in that order, so they cannot be mixed up.
- Give only the exact measurements asked for. Your blinds are made to your measurements.
- Measure every window separately. Windows that look identical can differ slightly in size.
- Every home is different. If you are unsure about any part of measuring, contact us or call 1300 011 561, or send us your readings and a photo.
