How much do plantation shutters cost? What sets the price
There is no single price per window. Here is what sets the cost of plantation shutters and how to price your own home, window by window.

How much do plantation shutters cost? There is no single price per window, because the total depends mainly on the size of each opening, the material, the frame and the number of panels. The most accurate figure for your home comes from entering your measurements in the shutter configurator, and this guide explains what moves the price so you can plan a budget and compare quotes fairly.
In short
- The price depends on window size, material (PVC or timber), frame type and panel layout. Price each window separately rather than averaging.
- You see the price in the configurator before you order, so measure with our shutter measuring guide first and then price room by room.
- Budget for more than the shutters: delivery, Expert Review (a paid check) and installation if you are not fitting them yourself.
- Spend & Save discounts apply automatically on eligible orders.
- Compare quotes like for like: same material, frame, fit and what is included.
What sets the price of plantation shutters?
Five things do most of the work. The table shows how each one moves the price and how much control you have over it.
| Factor | How it affects the price | How much you control |
|---|---|---|
| Window size | Larger openings need more material and more panels | None, but accurate measuring matters |
| Material | PVC and timber are priced differently, and a stained finish differs from painted white | Full choice |
| Frame and fit | An outside frame covers a larger area than an inside fit | Partly, depth may decide it |
| Panel layout | More panels, T-posts and midrails add to the build | Partly |
| Bay and corner windows | More complex, and confirmed with our team before manufacture | Set by the window |
Delivery, Expert Review and installation also belong in the budget, and are covered below.
Window size and panel count
Size is the biggest driver, and it works in steps as well as smoothly. A single panel is about 900 mm wide at most, and an opening wider than about 950 mm needs more than one panel. A window that is only a little wider than the limit therefore adds a whole extra panel, along with the T-post and hinges that go with it.
This is why an average price per window is a poor guide. A small bathroom window and a wide living room window sit at opposite ends, and two windows that look similar can differ by a panel. Price every window on its own measurements.
It also means the measurements you enter matter, because they set the size and the price. Take them with our plantation shutters measuring guide so the price you see is for a shutter that fits.
PVC or timber: how material affects cost
We make plantation shutters in PVC, an aluminium-reinforced polymer, and in timber, which is paulownia. As a general guide, PVC is the more affordable of the two, and a stained timber finish typically costs more than a painted PVC shutter. If you want a painted finish in a kitchen, bathroom or laundry, PVC also happens to be the material that suits wet rooms, so the practical choice and the affordable choice often line up.
Timber earns its price when you want a visible grain or a stained colour that PVC cannot give. In a dry room such as a bedroom or living area, that can be worth it. Our guide to PVC or timber plantation shutters compares the two room by room, and you can look at finishes on the PVC plantation shutters and timber plantation shutters pages.
Frame type, fit and bay windows
Three frames are available: an inside Z-frame, an inside L-frame and an outside L-frame. An outside L-frame is mounted on the face of the wall or trim, so it covers a larger area than a shutter fitted inside the recess, and that can raise the price.
Depth and the condition of the opening often decide the frame before cost does. Blades in a Z-frame need 60 mm of clear depth, an inside L-frame needs 70 mm, and an outside L-frame projects about 65 mm. More than 6 mm of variation in the opening rules out an inside L-frame, and more than 12 mm rules out a Z-frame. Check what your windows allow before you budget around one frame.
Bay (45 degree) and corner (90 degree) shutters are confirmed with our team before manufacture. Send clear photos and measurements early, and settle the layout before you lock in a total.
Costs beyond the shutters
The shutters are the main cost, but a few other items belong in the budget.
Expert Review
Expert Review is a paid check. You share window photos and measurements, and the team checks fit, clearances and panel layout before production and talks through any changes. The alternative is a self review, where you check your own figures against the guide. The check is most useful on bay windows, older homes and any window that is not square. SureFit measurement protection is separate, and the warranty and SureFit page explains its conditions.
Delivery
Shutters arrive as bulky, separately packaged frames and panels. Delivery is shown as the amount for your actual order, so check the delivery page and the figure at checkout rather than assuming a flat fee.
Installation
Our model is that you measure and install, and we deliver the shutters with practical guidance and support. Fitting them yourself means there is no installer to pay. If you would rather hire someone, ask a local installer for a quote before you order. Our plantation shutters installation guide explains the fitting, and the installation guides page lists the guide for every product.
Discounts and Price Beat
Spend & Save discounts apply automatically on eligible orders, with no coupon. The terms and time limits change, so check the Spend & Save page. If you hold a like-for-like polymer shutter quote from an eligible Australian competitor, our Price Beat Guarantee may apply; the terms are on the shutter product page.
How much do plantation shutters cost for your whole home?
Working window by window is more reliable than any average. Follow this order:
- List every window you are considering, room by room.
- Choose a material for each room. PVC for kitchens, bathrooms and laundries, and PVC or timber for dry rooms.
- Measure each window using our shutter guide and the measuring guide for your window type.
- Price each window in the configurator and note the frame, panel count and price.
- Add the extras: delivery, Expert Review if you want it, and installation if you are hiring someone.
- Check discounts on the Spend & Save page.
- Review the total and decide whether some windows suit a blind instead.
Here is how that looks for a typical four-bedroom house. The table is a planning aid, not a price list: it shows what to record for each window.
| Room | Likely material | What affects the price |
|---|---|---|
| Main bedroom | Timber or PVC | Window width and panel count |
| Bedrooms two to four | PVC or timber | Sizes often differ slightly, so price each separately |
| Living and dining | PVC or timber | Wide openings mean several panels; check for a bay |
| Kitchen | PVC | Usually smaller; check clearance to taps and handles |
| Bathroom and laundry | PVC | Small openings; keep hinges and metal parts dry |
Are plantation shutters expensive?
Shutters usually cost more than most fabric blinds or curtains for the same window. They are rigid, framed and built to stay fitted, so there is more material and more manufacturing in each one. Whether that makes them expensive depends on what you compare them with and how long you plan to stay.
Many people get good value by using shutters where they do the most work and using blinds elsewhere. Wet rooms and street-facing windows are common choices for shutters, while bedrooms that need to be very dark may be better served by a blockout roller blind. Our comparison of plantation shutters vs blinds sets out the trade-offs, and are plantation shutters worth it looks at lifespan and value.
How to compare quotes fairly
Two quotes for shutters are only comparable if the shutters are the same. Check each of these before you compare totals.
- The same material and finish, for example PVC against PVC.
- The same frame type and fit, inside or outside.
- The same panel count, T-post positions and midrails.
- What is included: measuring, delivery and installation.
- Who takes responsibility for a measuring error, and on what conditions.
- Warranty terms, including what a defect claim covers.
- Whether the D-mould is included. It is standard on every panel we make.
Tip: Ask every supplier for the frame type, panel count and finish in writing before you compare prices. A lower total often reflects a different frame or a smaller scope, not a better price.
