How to pair plantation shutters with curtains

Shutters and curtains work well together when you plan the clearances first. Here is where to fit the track, which fabrics suit and when to skip curtains.

How to pair plantation shutters with curtains: white shutters with sheer S Fold curtains drawn open at each side

To pair plantation shutters with curtains, hang the curtains on a track that sits above and wider than the shutter frame, so the fabric stacks beside the window and the panels can open and close freely. Shutters do the daytime work of controlling light and privacy, while curtains add softness, colour and, in a blockout fabric, the darkness shutters cannot give. Plan the clearances first and the styling follows.

In short

  • Fit the curtain track above and wider than the shutter frame, so curtains stack beside the window and not across the panels.
  • Check three clearances: the shutter frame depth (60 mm, 70 mm or about 65 mm), the swing of the panels, and how far your curtains project (double curtains 220 to 250 mm).
  • Use sheers for softness and blockout or lined curtains where the room needs to be dark.
  • Skip curtains in kitchens, bathrooms and laundries. PVC shutters are complete on their own there.
  • Measure and confirm the shutters first, then the track.

Do shutters look better with or without curtains?

Either can look complete. Shutters are a finished window treatment on their own, and curtains are an addition, not a rescue. The choice depends on the room and what you need the window to do.

Room Curtains with shutters? Why
Kitchen No Curtains are not used in kitchens. PVC shutters do the job alone
Bathroom and laundry Not suggested Wet rooms suit PVC shutters on their own
Bedroom Yes, usually Blockout curtains add the darkness shutters cannot, plus softness
Living room Optional Sheers or S Fold curtains soften the hard lines of a frame
Dining room Optional Lined curtains add drape and some night privacy

Shutters give fine control of light and privacy through the day, and they suit wet rooms. Curtains give softness, colour, a taller look and, with a blockout fabric, a darker room. Compare them honestly and the pairing makes sense: shutters for control, curtains for comfort. Our plantation shutters vs blinds guide covers the wider comparison.

Plan the clearances first

Four measurements decide whether the pairing works. Check them before you buy either product.

Clearance Figure Why it matters
Shutter frame depth Z-frame blades need 60 mm, inside L-frame 70 mm; an outside L-frame projects about 65 mm Sets how far the shutter sits into the room
Panel swing Panels open into the room, on the hinge side you choose Curtains and furniture must leave space, or the panels catch
Curtain projection Double curtains project 220 to 250 mm; built-in pelmet cavities need 250 mm depth The track and fabric sit in front of the shutter
Stack-back One-way about 30% of track width; centre opening about 15% each side The stacked curtains must sit beside the window, not over the outer panel

The curtain guide suggests adding at least 30% to the window width when you want curtains to frame a window. If you want the stack completely clear of the shutter frame, you will need more than that, so work out the stack-back for your opening and add it to each side.

Choose the track and where it goes

The track is the part that decides whether the curtains and shutters get in each other's way.

  • Ceiling or wall fit. A ceiling (top) fit lets the fabric fall from the ceiling to the floor, which adds height and keeps the curtain line clear above the shutter. A wall (face) fit sits on the wall above the window, so check its projection against the shutter frame.
  • Width. Make it wider than the shutter frame, with the stack-back on each side.
  • Height. Set it well above the top of the frame so the fabric does not brush the top panel.
  • Brackets. Extension brackets hold the track further from the wall, which can help where something projects, such as an outside L-frame.
  • Style. A Designer track has a plain straight profile, a Half Moon track has a curved front edge, and a Motorised track adds a motor. Colours are silver, black and white, and a white track blends with a white shutter frame.
  • Wand. A wand of 910 mm or 1520 mm lets you draw the curtains without handling the fabric, or you can have no wand.

The S Fold curtains page and the wider curtains range show the tracks and headings in more detail.

Choose curtains that suit shutters

Shutters have clean, regular lines, so choose a heading and a fabric that either echo them or soften them.

Fabric

  • Sheers give softness and some privacy by day. Cassis is a linen-look polyester sheer in warm neutrals (Sand, Linen, Fawn, Pewter). Cassis Volume is the same sheer in whites and greys, and Bali is the lightest linen-look sheer. At night with the lights on, people outside can see through a sheer, but closed shutters solve that.
  • Blockout curtains are coated, opaque cloth with no light passing through. Galaxy is the heaviest and Epic is a three-pass coated fabric.
  • Lined curtains have a blockout lining sewn behind a sheer so both move together on one track.
  • Double curtains put a sheer and a blockout on two tracks, drawn separately.

Heading and colour

S Fold is the most popular heading and gives regular waves. Pencil pleat and pinch pleat give a more traditional look, and an inverted pleat has a flat front for a tailored feel. With white PVC shutters in Glacial White, a Cassis Volume Snow or Pearl sheer sits softly against the frame, and stained timber pairs well with a warm Cassis or Bali taupe. Order samples of the curtain fabric and hold them against a shutter sample in the room.

Length

Choose just off the floor, touching, or puddled. Shutters sit on the window, so the curtains usually hang from the track to the floor in front of them.

How to pair plantation shutters with curtains: plan and measure together

Work in this order so nothing has to be re-planned.

  1. Measure and confirm the shutters first, using the shutter measuring guide. Fix the frame type, the projection and the hinge sides.
  2. Mark the panel swing. Note the floor and wall space each open panel needs.
  3. Decide the track position. Ceiling or wall fit, height and width, with room for the stack-back.
  4. Measure the curtains with their own guide. Use the curtains measuring guide, or the double curtains measuring guide for two layers. Curtains are ordered by track width rather than fabric width.
  5. Order samples of the curtain fabric and the shutter finish, and view them together.

Bay and corner windows

Bay and corner windows suit the pairing well, since curtains on a curved track can wrap around the outside of the shutters. Bay (45 degree) and corner (90 degree) shutters are confirmed with our team before manufacture, and the curtain track has its own rules. Curved tracks are available as Designer and Motorised only, with up to two 90-degree bends online, either fitting into the bay or wrapping around it. Box and bay tracks suit 45 and 90 degree bends, and you send us a photo and a plan sketch. See curved curtains and box and bay curtains for the details.

Common mistakes

  • A track the same width as the window. The curtains sit over the outer panels when open. Make the track wider.
  • A track too close to the shutter. The fabric catches on blades or hinges, and panels cannot swing. Check the projection and the swing.
  • Fixing the track before the shutters are confirmed. Confirm the frame first.
  • Curtains in a wet room. PVC shutters do the job on their own in kitchens, bathrooms and laundries.
  • Using a generic method for the curtains. Follow the curtain measuring guide for the track width and drop.
  • Leaving a bedroom without a blockout layer. Choose a blockout or lined curtain where the room needs to be dark.

Tip: Mark the panel swing and the stack-back on the floor with painter's tape before you order. If the tape hits furniture or the curtain line, you can change the plan before anything is made.

Questions

Do shutters look better with or without curtains?

Either can look complete. Shutters alone suit kitchens, bathrooms and laundries, while curtains add softness in living rooms and darkness in bedrooms.

How wide should the curtain track be with shutters?

Wider than the shutter frame, so the curtains stack beside the window and do not cover the panels. The curtain guide suggests adding at least 30% when you want curtains to frame a window, and you will need more if you want the stack fully clear of the frame.

Can I hang curtains in front of plantation shutters?

Yes. Keep the track above and wider than the frame, allow for the shutter projection and the swing of the panels, and check how far the curtains project from the wall.

Should I use sheer or blockout curtains with shutters?

Use sheers for softness and blockout or lined curtains where you need a darker room. Double curtains give you both, on two tracks.

Do I need curtains with shutters in a kitchen or bathroom?

No. PVC shutters are complete on their own in kitchens, bathrooms and laundries, and curtains are not used in kitchens.
