Are plantation shutters worth it? Value, lifespan and resale
Plantation shutters suit some windows far better than others. Weigh where they earn their keep, how long they last and what to check before you buy.

Are shutters worth the investment? For many homes, yes: plantation shutters are a fitted, durable covering with fine control of light and privacy, PVC that suits wet rooms and no fabric to replace. They are not the right answer for every window. This guide sets out where the value comes from, what affects how long shutters last, and what to check before you buy.
In short
- The value comes from a fitted, durable covering, fine light and privacy control, PVC for wet rooms and no fabric to replace.
- Lifespan depends on the material, moisture, sun, care and the hinges and moving parts.
- Resale value depends on the buyer and the market, so treat it as a bonus rather than the reason to buy.
- They are a weaker choice where a room must be very dark, or where the window is very wide or has a shallow recess.
- Use the buying checklist in this guide to compare quotes like for like.
Are shutters worth the investment?
Are plantation shutters worth it? The honest answer is that it depends on the window. Shutters usually cost more than most fabric blinds, so the question is whether the things they do well matter in that room. Where they do, the extra spend pays for a covering you fit once and live with. Where they do not, a blind or curtain does the job for less.
Think about it window by window. A steamy bathroom, a street-facing living room and a bedroom that must be very dark are three different answers.
Where plantation shutters earn their keep
Shutters justify their price in a handful of situations.
- Wet rooms. PVC shutters suit kitchens, bathrooms and laundries, because the material is waterproof. They are for interior use only, and should be kept out of continual direct soaking.
- Privacy with light. Tilt the blades to keep daylight while stopping people seeing in, and adjust them through the day. The D-mould on each panel blocks the view between panels.
- Windows you need to open. Hinged panels swing out of the way so you can reach the glass, the handle or the fresh air.
- No fabric to replace. A shutter has no fabric to wear out, though the hinges and tilt mechanism still matter (see below).
- No chain or cord. Shutters have no chain or cord to manage, which is one less thing to think about in a busy household.
- A fitted look. A framed shutter reads as part of the architecture, and you choose the finish. See the plantation shutters guide for the options.
How long do plantation shutters last?
How long a shutter lasts depends on the following factors, and most of them are in your control.
| Factor | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Material | PVC is waterproof; timber responds to humidity | PVC in wet rooms, timber in dry rooms |
| Moisture | Hinges and other metal parts need to stay dry | Keep them dry, and keep shutters out of continual direct soaking |
| Heat | PVC shutters should be kept clear of cooking heat | Allow distance from a cooktop |
| Sun | Strong sun can age any finish over time | Compare finishes and ask about the warranty on the finish |
| Handling | Forcing a stiff panel stresses the hinges and the tilt mechanism | Move panels and blades gently |
| Fit | A shutter made accurately to the opening moves freely and does not rub | Measure with our plantation shutter measuring guide and consider an Expert Review |
| Care | Dust and grime build up along the blades | Dust regularly and wipe gently |
Our shutter warranty covers qualifying defects under its terms, so read them on the warranty and SureFit page. SureFit is a separate measurement protection with its own conditions. If a blade or panel stops moving as it should, plantation shutter problems and how to fix them covers the common causes.

Do plantation shutters add value to your house?
Some buyers like fitted shutters, and a well-finished window can help a home look cared for. But the effect on the price depends on the buyer, the local market, the style of the house and how the rest of it presents. Be wary of anyone who quotes you a resale percentage.
There are two practical points. First, fitted shutters are usually treated as part of the home rather than a movable furnishing, so they tend to stay with the house, but check your contract of sale to be sure. Second, if resale is your main reason for buying, ask a local agent what buyers in your area respond to before you spend.
When shutters are less worth it
Shutters are a weaker choice in a few situations.
- A room that must be very dark. Shutters are not blackout. A blockout blind, a cassette or blockout curtains is the stronger first layer, and you can add shutters on top. Our guide to whether shutters block light, heat and noise explains why.
- Very wide windows and glass doors. A panel is about 900 mm wide at most, so wide openings need several panels, and sliding and French doors are better served by blinds for sliding doors.
- A shallow recess. Blades need 60 mm of clear depth in a Z-frame and 70 mm in an inside L-frame. An outside L-frame projects about 65 mm into the room. Our shutter frame types guide shows which frame suits your window.
- A tight budget. A roller blind is usually the lower-cost option for the same window.
- A rental. Shutters are a lasting change, so check your lease and get written permission first.

A quick worth-it test, room by room
Run each room through this table. Rooms with a strong case for and a manageable case against are where shutters usually earn their price.
| Room | The case for shutters | The case against |
|---|---|---|
| Bathroom | PVC suits wet rooms, and the blades give privacy with light | Not for continual direct soaking, such as a window in direct shower spray |
| Kitchen | PVC suits the room, and hinged panels give access to the window | Keep clear of cooking heat, and check clearance to taps and handles |
| Laundry | PVC suits the room | The same care as a bathroom |
| Living and dining | A fitted look and light control that you adjust through the day | Wide windows need several panels |
| Main bedroom | Privacy and control of daylight | Plan a blockout layer if you need real darkness |
| Nursery | Fine light control | We suggest ZeroGravity cordless, blockout and cassette roller blinds first |
| Home theatre | Little | Darkness matters more; start with blockout and a full cassette |
If most of your important windows land in the first three rows, shutters are likely to be worth it. If your priorities are bedrooms and a media room, you may want shutters on only a few windows and blockout blinds on the rest.
What to look for when buying shutters
A short checklist protects you from the common surprises. Use it to compare any supplier.
- The material suits the room. PVC for kitchens, bathrooms and laundries, and timber for dry rooms.
- The frame suits the window. Check the depth, and whether your opening is even enough. More than 6 mm of variation rules out an inside L-frame, and more than 12 mm rules out a Z-frame.
- The panel layout follows the window. Panels of about 900 mm at most, with T-posts and midrails placed where they echo the glazing.
- The D-mould is included. It is standard on every panel we make, at no extra charge.
- The hinges and tilt mechanism feel solid. Ask for a description, and look at photos or samples. On our PVC shutters the tilt mechanism is concealed.
- The finish looks right in your light. Order free samples and look at them morning and evening.
- Someone checks the measurements. Find out who measures, what a review covers, and what happens if the measuring is wrong. Ours is a paid Expert Review, with SureFit as a separate protection.
- The warranty terms are clear. Ask what a defect claim covers and how long it lasts.
- Delivery is spelled out. Shutters arrive as bulky, separately packaged frames and panels, and the delivery amount is shown for your actual order.
- The price is like for like. Compare the same material, frame, panel count and inclusions. Our guide to how much plantation shutters cost shows what moves the price.
Tip: Write the checklist answers down for each quote. When two totals differ, the difference is usually hiding in the frame, the panel count or what the price includes.

What should I look for when buying shutters?
Check the material for the room, the frame and depth, the panel layout, the hinges and tilt mechanism, who measures and what happens if the measuring is wrong, and the warranty terms. Compare quotes like for like.
